Bruce F. Kawin, How Movies Work

When I was a kid, I thought that movies were made in an hour and a half and that they were shot in sequence. I was vaguely aware that there had to be a camera, but I imagined that it could change setups instantaneously. . . . It took a long time for me to realize that movies are made. I had to step back even further to notice that they are made of shots, that each shot is a unit in itself as well as part of the whole, and that it is possible for the way a film is shot to convey its meaning.

These Outlines represent only a first introduction to some important aspects of film language. The English text always appears side by side with the Italian text: feel free to "jump" back and forth between the two, it's a useful way to become more familiar with the terminology in both languages!

At the end of each Outline you will find the links to a few carefully selected expansion and revision materials available on the web: take advantage of these resources, which are obviously different for the two languages (why not try them both?!?!).

Once you have read these Outlines (or even before, indeed at any time) you will find at the end of this page a Want to know more? section which invites you to revise and take a closer, more systematic look at the whole range of film language aspects.
